ENFIELD — Chief Edward N. Richards would like to announce that Enfield Fire District 1 will be recognizing the men and women of the department as part of International Firefighters Day on May 4.

International Firefighters Day, celebrated each year on May 4, is a way to say thank you to firefighters around the world for all that they do to keep their communities safe.

“Now more than ever, it is important to recognize our firefighters and other first responders for everything they do to protect and serve the community,” Chief Richards said. “I would like to acknowledge the tireless work the firefighters in Enfield Fire District 1 do on a daily basis on behalf of the residents of Enfield.”

Born out of a tragic loss of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia in 1999, International Firefighters Day honors their lives and the sacrifices that firefighters everywhere are willing to make as part of their job.

The U.S.-based National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) commemorates the day with activities that celebrate and show appreciation for the work of firefighters everywhere.

Chief Richards encourages Enfield residents to review the following ways to honor firefighters as part of International Firefighters Day:

  • Light your home in red on May 4-5 by changing your porch lights and sharing your story on social media using the hashtag #ShineYourLight4Firefighters.
  • Practice fire and life safety in your home, and take steps to keep firefighters and other first responders safe. More information can be found here
  • On May 5, take part in #Give2NFFFNow by making a contribution to the NFFF.
