Chief Edward N. Richards reports that Enfield Fire District No. 1 responded to a large mill fire this morning to provide mutual aid to the Thompsonville Fire Department.

At approximately 6:15 a.m. this morning, Enfield Fire District No. 1 responded to a four-story mill fire at 33 North River St. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully-involved fire with heavy flames and smoke.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the flames and were able to have the fire under control within 90 minutes.

Alongside Enfield Fire District No 1., the Shaker Pines, North Thompsonville and Hazardville Fire Departments provided mutual aid to the Thompsonville Fire Department on scene. The Suffield Fire Department also provided mutual aide assistance on scene with an aerial ladder.

The building was a total loss and will be demolished at a later date. The Amtrak line in the area is shutdown until further notice. Once the building is demolished the Amtrak line will be able to safely reinstate service.

Main Street in Thompsonville, west of High Street, is partially closed due to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Thompsonville Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office.
