Chief Edward N. Richards would like to recognize the men and women of Enfield Fire District No. 1 as part of International Firefighters Day.

International Firefighters Day, celebrated each year on May 4, is a way to say thank you to firefighters around the world for all that they do to keep their communities safe.

Born out of the tragic loss of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia in 1999, International Firefighters Day honors their lives and the sacrifices that firefighters everywhere are willing to make as part of their job.

“Each and every day our firefighters answer calls for service without a moment of hesitation and without regard for their own safety, to ensure our community members’ health and safety,” said Chief Richards. “I would like to recognize their daily efforts and the many sacrifices they make for those in need.”

The U.S.-based National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) commemorates the day with activities that celebrate and show appreciation for the work of firefighters everywhere.

Chief Richards encourages Enfield residents to light their homes in red on May 4-5 by changing their porch lights and sharing their stories on social media using the hashtag #ShineYourLight4Firefighters as a way to honor firefighters as part of International Firefighters Day.
