With lithium-ion battery fires rising, the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is encouraging citizens to prevent battery fires by following the C.H.A.R.G.E. acronym. Additionally, if a lithium-ion battery produces an odor or heats up, changes color or shape, leaks, or creates an odd noise, stop using it immediately. Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Instead, recycle them at a local battery-recycling location. Store lithium-ion batteries away from items that may burn, and do not put them in direct sunlight or keep them in hot cars, as this is a fire hazard. Remove spare or loose lithium-ion batteries from checked luggage and keep them on your person when on a plane. To learn more and for additional safety tips, visit batteryfiresafety.org.
