As temperatures drop, Enfield Fire District No. 1 reminds residents to take a few simple steps to prevent home fires this winter.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, home heating fires peak during the winter months.
Test your home’s carbon monoxide alarms and smoke detectors once a month by pressing and holding down the “test” button and waiting until the alert sounds.
If you use a fireplace or wood stove, have a professional inspect and clean your home’s chimneys and vents annually to maintain healthy indoor air quality and prevent fires.
Ensure anything that can burn is at least three feet away from fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters. Space heaters should only be plugged directly into wall outlets rather than extension cords or power strips. Set space heaters up on a hard, level surface, and be sure to turn them off before going to bed or leaving the room.
