Enfield Fire District #1 is proud to announce a series of significant improvements to its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) supplemental coverage over the past year.

We have enhanced public safety, expanded district capabilities, and ensured that taxpayer dollars continue to be used effectively and responsibly. We worked tirelessly to elevate the level of care provided to the community.

Among the most notable advancements was the successful transition of sponsorship and medical control oversight from Johnson Memorial Hospital to Saint Francis Hospital. This improvement strengthens clinical support, enhances training opportunities, and ensures the district remains aligned with the highest standards of emergency medical care.

In addition, both district Engine apparatus that respond to medical emergencies were outfitted with portable airway suction units—critical tools for airway management during medical emergencies. Comprehensive training was provided for all EMT personnel in the administration of epinephrine via syringe, increasing the district’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to severe allergic reactions and asthmatic emergencies, while keeping cost extremely low when compared to epi-pen administration pharmaceutical mark-up. All department EMTs were required to take the 2025 CT OEMS protocol rollout, this ensures all providers are up to the requirements and standards of EMS care set by the state and medical control sponsored hospital.

As part of the district’s ongoing modernization efforts, all Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on apparatus leaving the station have been upgraded to state-of-the-art LIFEPAK CR2 units by Physio Control. These new devices provide clearer instructions, faster deployment capabilities, and enhanced support during cardiac arrest emergencies for both adult and pediatric patients.

Beyond internal training, we have provided numerous educational programs to local businesses, schools and community members. These sessions have strengthened partnerships, improved emergency preparedness, and expanded lifesaving knowledge throughout the district.

“Life safety above all things”, remains the core principle behind these improvements. Enfield Fire District #1 continues to uphold this mission by ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently, transparently, and in ways that directly enhance community safety.

As the holiday season begins, it is important to remember cooking safety tips to ensure your meals go smoothly and successfully.

The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) reported that Thanksgiving is the peak day of the year for home cooking fires, with over three times the daily average of cooking fires. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve follow closely behind, with both days having nearly twice the daily average.

According to NFPA, unattended cooking was the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. Cooking also causes half of reported home fires, almost two of every five home fire injuries, and is a leading cause of home fire deaths.

To prevent cooking fires, never leave anything cooking on the stovetop unsupervised, and stay home with meals that require an oven. Remember to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working prior to the holiday, and keep children away from the stove, hot foods, knives, kitchen appliances, and cords.
